St. Bonaventure Students Travel to DC

Members of the St. Bonaventure Scholars program visited The Museum of American History, The White House, and The Capitol in Washington DC. Students were able to enter the White House and learn about the history of the presidency, got a full tour of the Capitol, and entered the galleries of The House of Representatives and Senate.

Curley students visited the Institute of Marine and Environmental Research Technology today, where they learned about land-based aquaculture, the environmental impact of dinoflagellates, and their fascinating bioluminescent properties. They also observed a demonstration of microscopic screening to analyze the water quality of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

St. Bonaventure Scholars visited The Baltimore Basilica and walked to where the St. Mary’s Seminary used to be on Paca Street. The seminary is gone but the chapel still remains. We were given a tour of the upper and lower chapels. The lower chapel is where St Elizabeth Anne Seton discerned her call to be a sister and start the Sisters of Charity. The lower chapel is also where Mother Mary Lang professed her vows and started the Oblates.

The Curley Community had a very special guest today, Mr. Bud Gahs, a 100-year-old World War II veteran of the 42nd Infantry Division (Rainbow Division), gave a presentation to and fielded questions from our students. Mr. Gahs spoke about his experiences as a young man serving in combat in France and Germany, particularly his experiences in combat and liberating the concentration camp at Dachau. Mr. Gahs advised our young men to learn from our history, to avoid wars, and to pray for our country. Yesterday was the running of the Curley Classic. This year several hundred middle school and elementary school students participated in the race. The older runners competed on a 1.4 mile course, while the younger runners ran just under one mile. All of the races featured an exciting finish onto the track at the Curley Bowl, and into the finish line. Each year, the race times continue to improve and we are always excited to host this event for the Catholic middle schools and our future friars!

A group of students from the St. Bonaventure Scholars Program participated in a college trip to North Carolina. Students visited UNC Chapel Hill, Duke University, Wake Forest University, NC State University, and High Point University. Several alums studying at these schools were able to connect with the group as well. There were also plenty of time for fun, laughs, and great meals together

Bishop Michael Martin ’79, a former Curley teacher, principal and president, and now Bishop of Charlotte, NC celebrated the All Saints Day Mass, reminding everyone that the call to sainthood stems from the fact that God loves each of us.  Also joining in the celebration were Monsignor James Farmer ’65 and Fr. Sam Young ’80, along with the Curley friars and deacon members of the theology department.  Bishop Martin enjoyed catching up with many of his former colleagues during his visit.

Congratulations to Curley goalkeeper Liam Girard ’25 and the Harford County Special Olympics team on winning the Maryland State Championship gold medal for the second consecutive year. Liam has coached the squad for three seasons. A few of Liam’s players attended the varsity soccer team’s game on Friday at John Carroll to support Liam and the Friars.

Friday October 18, students wore pink, the symbol of support for breast cancer awareness, especially during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The color pink has become closely associated with efforts to raise awareness, promote early detection, and support those affected by breast cancer. Curley’s students, faculty and staff also collected money to support a local cancer charity.

Curley AP Environmental Science students visited to the Chesapeake Bay Today, the students had a fantastic hands-on learning experience focused on environmental conservation and marine ecology. During the trip, students learned about platinum-rated, environmentally friendly building design and its importance in sustainable development. They also delved into the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay, examining key indicators of aquatic health. They were able to hop on canoes and head into deeper areas of the creek, where they conducted various water quality tests, including measuring pH, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, phosphorus, and nitrate levels.
